Monday 27th November, 2006

I am back at last, the British Cod Championships is now completed, done, and dusted until next year, and I can now try and keep up to date with my own write ups.

Just prior to the Championships I had been quite successful in locating the cod, with the best day with Steve Cuthbert’s group where we were catching fish all day, which included four Cod between eight and twenty pounds, with the biggest, and the smallest falling to the rod of Eddie, the newest member of Steve’s group, and his first ever cod to boot as well.

We also had three Pollock into double figures, as well as Congers up over forty-five pounds, a couple of these were taken on the Maxximus Super Sensor multi tipped rods. These rods look so flimsy, but used properly they can handle angry fifty pound Congers, and by just changing the tip, they are perfect for Bream fishing as well, what more could you want, one rod that can cover all your angling requirements.

I have just got myself sponsored by Fladen which I am quite pleased about, as they are certainly bringing some excellent kit out now, and I will have it onboard to try out, so I will let you know my thoughts on it.

The Cod Championships went off very well, although there were a couple of hic-ups the evening before with a couple of boats coming up from Poole developing problems, but with a bit of help from some very good mates, I was able to replace them at very short notice with a couple of boats from Langston.

The first day of the competition we were restricted to fishing the Solent due to there being force eight gales forecast, and the majority of the boats practiced the conservation of the Cod stocks, as there were only four caught. The second day was a vast improvement, and all the boats were able to fish outside the Needles. This proved to be a lot better with a hell of a lot more Cod being caught, along with Pollock, Bass, Congers, and Turbot. For my part in the competition all that I could do was to practice Cod conservation, even though the lads were fishing their socks off, all we could manage were Pollock, Congers, and a very nice Turbot caught by Mike Glazebrook,

But unfortunately in a Cod only competition non of them won prizes. Still, as I had last years winners,(Perry Dack, & Kim Bowden) onboard I might have been under a bit of pressure, and trying too hard.

That’s about it for now, the weather is back to normal, BLOWING a GALE AGAIN, what’s new.

Tight lines,

Dave
